Summary: In this film adaptation of the best selling book, the lives of two great German scientist, Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Friedrich Gauss, are contrasted. Both were about the same age and came from Brunswick, in Germany. However, while Humboldt came from a priviledged background and traveled the globe constantly, Gauss rose from poverty to become the founder of numbers theory and rarely traveled.
"'Die Vermessung der Welt' ist ein bildgewaltiges Kinoabenteuer über einen Naturforscher und einen Mathematiker. Zwei Leben verbinden sich zu einer Geschichte über Leidenschaft, Einsamkeit, Liebe und Fortschritt. Carl Friedrich Gauß und Alexander von Humboldt geben sich nicht zufrieden damit, was sie sind, sondern kämpfen besessen und beseelt für die Erkenntnis, der eine im Urwald, der andere am Schreibtisch. Aus Genies werden Menschen, wenn sie der Liebe begegnen. Gauß kann seinen Gefühlen nachgeben - anders als Humboldt, der dies erst in der Begegnung mit Gauß zulässt.
