Summary: Enzymology at the Membrane Interface: Interfacial Enzymology and Protein-Membrane Binding, Volume 583 covers an important subset of enzymes that work in the environment of the biological cell membrane. This field, called interfacial enzymology, involves a special series of experimental approaches for the isolation and study of these enzymes. Volume 583 focuses on interfacial enzymes that act on lipid substrates. Methods for detecting and quantifying the binding of proteins and enzymes to membranes in vitro are covered, as well as, methods for detection of interfacial binding of proteins and enzymes to membranes in living cells. Some interfacial enzymes form protein-protein complexes, and this is described. Also included are studies to evaluate the substrate specificity of interfacial enzymes on natural members. Novel spectroscopic studies for providing structural insight into protein-membrane binding are discussed, as are methods for production of recombinant interfacial enzymes.
