Vienna in the 1860's. Count Waldner is a luckless gambler. When his debt overwhelm him, he moves his family into an elegant hotel attempting to maintain an image of wealth. The countess is hoping her daughter Arabella will find a wealthy husband, while Zdenka, the younger daughter is forced to pass off as a man.
